Cherry Hinton Netball Club, formerly known as Chesterton Netball Club was formed in July 2002 by Floria Marshall and Sally Galenski. The club was initially set up non-competitively, and just as an excuse for a social gathering and a bit of keep fit. In the early days the club struggled with attendance numbers and many a training night was abandoned for the nearest pub!

In 2003 we decided to enter the summer league and surprisingly we had enough players for two teams. Unfortunately, the following year numbers dwindled to an all time low of just four members. Floria and Sally were almost faced with having to call it a day. However, their love of netball and sheer determination to succeed with the club meant they kept it going.

It was at this time that they decided to move the training ground from Chesterton to Netherhall and eventually rename the club from Chesterton to Cherry Hinton Netball Club.

The club has since grown from strength to strength with two teams playing in the Cambridge and District Netball League. All of our members are very loyal, committed and dedicated to being part of a very friendly and social club.

Having finished top of Division 2 into the 2009/10 season, the 1st team are currently top and unbeaten in Division 1, and hoping to be promoted to the County Premier League this season! Our 2nd team are at the top of Division 4, and are hoping for promotion to Division 3 at the end of this season too!

Friday 19th Dec was the Christmas meal & awards night for 2008. The meal was at Stazione's, followed by more drinks at the Rock & at Revolution. It was a great night - and all but 2 members of the netball club were able to attend which was a fantastic turn out! Awards were as follows: 'Managers Player Of The Year 2008' went to Hannah & 'Most Improved 2008' went to Joss - these 2 awards were voted for by the management. Voted by the players themselves were: '1st Team Player Of The Year' which went to Karen & '2nd Team Player Of The Year' which went to Joss. Photo's now on the photo gallery ....!

This years fundraiser took place on Saturday 22nd November 2008. Everyone worked really hard to sell tickets for the event and raffle tickets before the actual night. With more raffle tickets sold on the night and a successful 50/50 pound bucket the night was a great success. We raised £993.05 in total which we are thrilled about. There was many a sore head the next day especially for those that went on to party at Floria's house. A truly great night was had by all.

Charity and Fundraising Events

Race Night

In July 2008, we held a fund raising 'Race Night' to raise some money for the club - but also, to raise some money for charity.

During the evening, we also had a raffle which helped bring our total for the evening to over £550!

Just under half of this total was donated to the Oncology ward at Addenbrookes - more specifically - the day care unit.

Patients had been requesting some portable DVD players to pass the time they spent in hospital, whilst receiving treatments, so this money was spent on something that the patients themselves had requested.

Race For Life

As a club, we have been involved in the Race For Life charity runs, for 4 years now. It is always a great day, with thousands of women taking part in them up & down the country, raising vital funds for Breast Cancer Care. Some of the girls on the team have been affected in some way with cancer, whether it be a family member or a friend, so we feel that it is extremely important to support such a good cause as a team. For some it is an emotional day, but there is such a great atmosphere and it is great way to team build within the club.

We had a good turn outs in both 2007 & 2008, but a record of 14 people in 2009 & 2010 which was a fantastic effort! Having collected all sponsorship money in - we managed to smash our target amount of £1000, with approximately £1500!!! Massive well done to everyone that took part, and to those who so very generously sponsored us! Bring on Race For Life 2011...

Netball clothes for Uganda

In 2007 we got involved in supporting the African Youth Ministries in Uganda. The charity helps to promote sports in the African villages were AIDS/HIV affects a high percentage of people.

By getting the children involved in the sports they hope to bring awareness to AIDS/HIV. They are trying especially hard to promote girls sports like netball.

This is a tough task due to cultural barriers within Africa, and it is a huge project that the Youth Ministry took on themselves with no funding so they relied on teams like ours to help support them to get the programme up & running. We got involved by sending our old netball kits over which consisted of tops, skirts, bibs & trainers.
